Tomàs Molina i Bosch (1876-1938) was a Spanish painter known for his still lifes, landscapes, and genre scenes. Although his work was influenced by Catalan modernism, he developed a unique and personal style that made him one of the most important artists of his time.
Biografía
Molina i Bosch was born in Barcelona on January 16, 1876, into a family of craftsmen. His father, Tomàs Molina i Esteve, was a carpenter and his mother, Carme Bosch i Guàrdia, was a dressmaker. He was the eldest of four children and was raised in a humble but cultured environment.
From a young age, Molina i Bosch showed a talent for drawing and painting. He studied at the Escola de Llotja in Barcelona, where he learned the basics of academic painting. Later, he continued his studies at the Acadèmia Galí, where he was influenced by the modernist style of the time.
In 1894, at the age of 18, Molina i Bosch had his first exhibition at the Sala Parés in Barcelona. His work was well received by the public and critics, and he began to establish himself as a professional artist. In 1897, he won the second prize at the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes in Madrid, which gave him greater recognition and prestige.
Molina i Bosch's personal life was marked by several tragedies. In 1902, his wife, Mercè Cases i Casas, died of tuberculosis, leaving him alone with their two children. In 1913, his daughter, Montserrat, also died of the same disease. These events had a profound impact on his work, which became more introspective and melancholic.
Despite these personal difficulties, Molina i Bosch continued to work and exhibit his paintings. In 1929, he was appointed professor of painting at the Escola de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi in Barcelona, a position he held until his death.
Molina i Bosch died on May 30, 1938, during the Spanish Civil War. He was 62 years old and had dedicated his life to art.
